Amazon India Fashion Week – Autumn-Winter 2015 : Nursing Noir

The runway at the Amazon India Fashion Week was an emergency ward for some minutes on Wednesday afternoon. No one tripped over those six-inch heels, we assure you. Lined hospital beds and IV bags with fairy lights stuffed in, were part of opening designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s show at Pragati Maidan, Delhi.

Titled “Because Medicine is the Best Laughter”, Pratap’s Autumn-Winter 2015 collection played with wool and leather, as well as a restricted colour palette comprising black and white. Long billowy dresses with pleats, blazers paired with knee-length skirts, sheath dresses, trench coats and a sweatshirt paired with an oversized skirt dominated the runway.

The models played the part by sporting similar surgical masks and nurse’s caps, as well as heeled brogues and
oxfords. Wool ikat checks and stripes dominated the collection, as did fat polkas in black.

Composer Karsh Kale, vocalist Ankur Tewari, producer Gaurav Raina and drummer Shardul Mehta gave a dark and tantalising background to Pratap’s noir-inspired show. It was a trailer to a gory fantasy, one that had the models dance, talk to invisible patients, fall on the floor and flirt. Too gimmicky? Maybe, but an opening show without some drama can be quite drab.
