Fashion Focus Meet #VIFF2015’s top 20

Now in its fourth year, Vogue India Fashion Fund (VIFF) has been a platform for the country’s upcoming designers since its conception in 2012. It gives newcomers in the field an opportunity to spotlight their work, grow their businesses and gain mentorship from the best in the fashion industry—including members of the Vogue team.

This year, with five accessory designers making it to the top 20, the fund has expanded beyond the realm of clothing. The first round of judging—held on June 10 at Mumbai’s Palladium Hotel—was an exciting flurry of nail-biting moments and countless outfit changes.

The winner will be awarded a cash prize to take their label further financially, and also receives a year’s worth of mentorship from an industry professional—alongside a fashion shoot to be featured in Vogue India. With all this for the win, can we really blame the contestants for their pre-judging jitters?

Among the participating designers there to showcase their collections were Dhruv Kapoor, Nimish Shah of label Shift, Payal Khandwala, Nitya Arora of Valliyan and Outhouse.

For some, it was their very first time meeting the panel. “I think I need a glass of wine now,” confessed a relieved participant, Pallavi Mohan, after she met with the jury. For others, it was about the familiarity of meeting old friends: “I’ve been in the jewellery industry for ten years and grown up with the members of the panel around me. Meeting them was lovely, so comfortable,” Nitya Arora told Vogue.

Who were the esteemed members of the jury? (One of the contestants went as far as calling them ‘the godmothers and godfathers of fashion’.) Vogue India’s editor Priya Tanna, fashion director Anaita Shroff Adajania, marketing director Oona Dhabar, couturiers Suneet Varma and Gaurav Gupta, fashion entrepreneur Pernia Qureshi, Sunil Sethi of FDCI, Alka Nishar of Aza and Kunal Dass of Van Heusen formed the judging panel.
