One of the most putting-off odours is that emanating out of smelly shoes. But looking to associate freshness and cheer with a pair of shoes is Karan Vij.
The young entrepreneur who works out of Panipat and Delhi has recently launched Scentra, one of the first scented shoe brands in the country.
The strawberry-scented insole made from recycled rubber might not bring in an overpowering, fragrant draft as you walk in a room, but the shoes do smell fresh.
“The idea occurred to me when I was studying in California, US. I came back to India, spent months of research and realised a gap in the footwear industry — between formal and casual sports shoes,” says Vij, who chose to work with organic cotton and an orthopedic sole.
“Most shoe fabrics these days come in synthetic material and it’s one of the reasons for bad odour, especially when worn without socks,” he explains. Manufactured in Spain, the styling of this eco-friendly canvas shoe is simple.
Vij has used cheerful colours and his father’s expertise in textiles to good use. “For Spring-Summer 2015, we have brought in florals, polka dots along with denim and two-tone colours. Also the shoes are foldable and ideal for travel,” he says.
Going digital first, the shoes are available online via Jabong and the brand’s own website. Apart from collections for men and women, there’s a line for kids as well. Prices start at Rs 1,800.
