Still Wearing Stan Smiths? Consider the Superstar
shion insiders like Raf Simons and Caroline de Maigret—not to mention every blogger and editor in the world—helped make 2014 the year of the Stan Smith. There’s no question: The ubiquitous white sneaker was worn into the ground by street-style stars; front-row mainstays; and designers in New York, London, Paris, Milan, and beyond. Now it seems Adidas is hoping to channel that momentum into another classic style from the archives. The Superstar—known colloquially as the Shell Toe—is being remastered and reintroduced to the world, and to send the message, Adidas recruited a superstar cast of the brand’s ambassadors.
Says Arthur Hoeld, general manager for Adidas Originals: “The Superstar and Stan Smith are two icons from the Adidas archives. Both have strong identities and different stories to tell. The Superstar is one of our most well-loved shoes, and we felt the time was right to celebrate this icon and work with some of the world’s most exciting artists to tell our stories throughout the year. We have ambitious targets for the shoe, and 2015 marks the next chapter of its legacy.”
Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys helped put Shell Toes on the map the first time around, but that was nearly three decades ago. In the heat of Nike-mania and the collaboration craze that has taken hold over the past few years, the Superstar has fallen off the radar. Can Rita Ora, Pharrell Williams, David Beckham, and Damian Lillard help revive the shoe with the bold stripes? Will Raf and Phoebe make the switch and come out in Shell Toes when they bow in 2015? It seems unlikely, but for those who are feeling Stan Smith fatigue, the Superstar might be just the thing. Watch the campaign video below.
