The dos and don’ts of neon make-up

Neon make-up may sound extreme and a little too risqué for most, but what you may not know about these tricky shades is that when done right, it can instantly amp up a dull look.

The key to wearing neon is to focus on one single feature. Pick where you want to apply it, and keep the rest of your look minimal.

Try corals, oranges and hot pinks for darker skin tones, and blues, purples and yellows for lighter skin tones, as Vogue gives you the dos and don’ts of wearing these vibrant hues this season.

Eyes

Do: A streak of neon liner can effortlessly add a pop of colour to your look and it’s the easiest way to get onto the neon bandwagon. Try applying an electric blue or neon green to your upper lid or along your lower lash line. For those who are especially daring, extend your line to a striking winged one.

Don’t: Go full force by using your bright orange, lime green and neon yellow shades as shadow on your lids, unless you want to channel Nikki Minaj. Neon colours are best used as delicate accents to a neutral palette.

Lips

Do: The bare-face-bold-lip look—it’s a fail proof make-up combination. Try hot pinks, fuchsias and corals on your lips, on a no make-up made-up face.

Don’t: Go overboard. Pairing a bold lip with a bright eye is a cardinal sin. Choose a single feature you would like to highlight and keep the rest of your make-up bare.

Nails

Do: Try it on your nails by playing with different nail art designs. Try geometric art like stripes or wear it as a single bold tone on its own. The best part about these hues is that they are day and night appropriate.

Don’t: Overdo it. Combining glitter polishes with neon nail art is a serious beauty faux pas. Don’t mix and match the two, stick to one bold element.

Hair

Do: Try temporary neon makeovers. You don’t have to make a solid commitment, but still have fun with hair chalks and hair sprays.

Don’t: Go all out and dye your entire mane an acid orange or lime green. Give clip on extensions and even dip dyed ends a try instead.
